Doublets is a solitaire word game created by Lewis Carroll in 1877 as a Christmas gift for two girls. It is possibly one of the most well known of games with words and also goes by other names such as Word-Links, Word Golf, World Ladder and Transformations. The goal is to take one word and, by changing one letter at a time, transform it into another word of the same length. My great aunt Ruth's papers include many such lists of words, both hand-written and typed. This book uses the doublet Girl to Miss, accompanied by photographs (ca. 1947), a typed narrative and digital reproductions of the hand-written doublets from Ruth's archive.
